Odisha Shivers as Cold Wave Intensifies; IMD Issues Five-Day Warning
Odisha is reeling under a severe cold wave as temperatures plummet across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day warning, cautioning residents about biting cold and dense fog conditions that will persist until December 31.
Southern and western districts remain the worst affected, with early morning movement disrupted by fog and freezing winds.
Kandhamal district has emerged as the epicentre of the cold spell, with G. Udayagiri recording the lowest temperature at 3.5°C, making it the coldest location in the state.
Other cold pockets include Daringbadi and Phulbani, both hovering around 6°C.
The IMD has also warned of dense fog in several districts, including Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nayagarh.
Reduced visibility has already impacted road transport, raising safety concerns for commuters.
Meteorologists predict no immediate relief until December 31, though a slight rise of 2–3°C in minimum temperatures is expected from January 1, depending on wind and atmospheric changes.
Authorities are urging residents to take precautions, particularly during early mornings and nights, and to exercise caution while travelling in fog-prone areas.
