Odisha PM POSHAN: Fruits Replace Eggs in School Meals for Non-Egg Consumers
In a move to ensure inclusivity in school nutrition programs, the Odisha School and Mass Education Department has issued fresh directives mandating fruit alternatives for students who opt out of consuming eggs under the PM POSHAN and Midday Meal Program Yojana (MMPY).
The directive, communicated via a letter dated October 22, 2025, from the State Nodal Officer of PM POSHAN, reinforces earlier instructions from August 2, 2025.
It urges all District Education Officers (DEOs) to strictly adhere to the guidelines to avoid public backlash or negative media coverage that could undermine the scheme’s credibility.
The PM POSHAN scheme, formerly known as the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, provides hot cooked meals to schoolchildren, with eggs included on designated days to boost protein intake.
Recognising that some children abstain from eggs due to dietary preferences, religious beliefs, or other reasons, the government has mandated fruits as a nutritious alternative.
This policy aims to maintain nutritional balance while respecting individual choices, reinforcing the government’s commitment to inclusive and equitable education.
