Odisha Orders Closure of Schools in Five Districts Ahead of Cyclone Threat

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has directed the closure of all schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres in five southern districts for two days as precautionary measures ahead of an approaching cyclonic system.

The decision aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid forecasts of heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The affected districts include Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri, where adverse weather conditions are expected due to the developing cyclone over the Bay of Bengal.

Educational institutions in these districts will remain closed on October 28 and 29.

The state government has also empowered district collectors in other regions to assess local weather conditions and take appropriate decisions regarding the closure of educational institutions if required.

During a high-level preparedness review meeting, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reiterated the state’s commitment to ensuring “zero casualty” during the cyclone and directed all departments to remain on high alert.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather system is likely to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 80-90 kmph in coastal and adjoining districts.

To strengthen disaster preparedness, the state has deployed 17 NDRF teams, 60 ODRAF teams, and 225 Fire Service teams in vulnerable areas.

Authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until further notice, while health facilities have been instructed to maintain adequate stock of medicines, emergency kits, and anti-snake venom.

The administration continues to closely monitor the situation and has urged residents in potentially affected districts to follow official advisories and remain prepared for any emergency.
