Odisha on High Alert After Indore Water Crisis: Government Steps Up Vigilance
Following the tragic water contamination incident in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, which claimed 10–15 lives and left hundreds hospitalised, the Odisha government has moved swiftly to prevent similar occurrences in the state.
The crisis in Indore was traced to faulty infrastructure in Bhagirathpura, where drainage and public toilet pipelines were laid over drinking water lines, leading to outbreaks of typhoid and diarrhoea.
Learning from this, Odisha’s Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra announced a series of precautionary measures.
Water samples have been collected from all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and districts for testing. Drinking water pipelines passing through drains have been removed, and corrective steps are underway wherever risks remain.
The government has emphasised continuous monitoring of water supplies across urban and rural areas.
Experts have welcomed the proactive stance, noting that timely intervention will safeguard public health. Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant and report irregularities to local authorities.
