Odisha Migrant Worker Dies After Falling Ill Aboard Train Returning from Surat
A migrant worker from Odisha died after reportedly falling seriously ill while travelling home from Surat, Gujarat, on board the Udhna–Brahmapur Amrit Bharat Express.
The deceased has been identified as Gobinda Chandra Swain, a resident of Hinjilicut in Ganjam district.
According to reports, he had been working in Surat’s Bestan area for nearly two months before deciding to return to Odisha.
During the journey, Swain’s health deteriorated, prompting fellow passengers to seek medical assistance through the railway helpline 139.
When the train arrived at Kantabanji railway station in Balangir district, a medical team examined him.
However, he was declared dead upon examination.
Following the incident, the Government Railway Police (GRP) took custody of the body and shifted it to a local hospital for post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, Kantabanji MLA Laxman Bag visited the hospital and coordinated with the district administrations of Balangir and Ganjam to facilitate the transportation of the body to the deceased’s native village.
He also extended financial assistance to the bereaved family.
The incident has once again highlighted the hardships faced by migrant workers who travel long distances for employment and the challenges that arise during emergency medical situations while in transit.
