Bhubaneswar, May 30, ( OT Webdesk) – In a groundbreaking initiative to promote menstrual and maternal hygiene, the Odisha government has launched several welfare projects under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida.
Speaking on World Menstrual Hygiene Day, Parida highlighted the importance of destigmatising menstruation and breastfeeding, emphasising a shift towards social acceptance.
As part of the ‘Menstruation-Friendly City—Empowered, Inclusive and Aware’ campaign, sanitary pad vending machines will be installed across schools, colleges, and offices, ensuring easy access to essential hygiene products for girls and women.
Additionally, new waste management technologies will enhance hygiene and safety in maternity wards.
A significant move toward supporting nursing mothers, the government will establish breastfeeding centres in public spaces such as bus stands and railway stations.
These centres will offer a safe and dignified environment for mothers to feed their infants, encouraging normalisation of breastfeeding in public.
“This initiative will change the way society views menstrual health and maternal care,” said Parida. “Women should feel empowered and comfortable when managing their hygiene needs.”
The Odisha government’s efforts align with its broader commitment to creating inclusive urban environments that prioritise women’s health and dignity, setting an inspiring example for other states.
