Odisha handicraft symbolises national pride: CM Majhi

Bhubaneswar, Aug 7 (UNI) Odisha’s handicraft sector is not only an economic pillar but also a symbol of national pride and dignity, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said today.

Inaugurating the “Ekta” Handicraft Fair at Janata Maidan on the occasion of National Handicraft Day, Majhi said Odisha’s weaving tradition,from ancient maritime trade to the modern global fashion stage, continues to reflect excellence, spirituality, and culture.

The Chief Minister announced that the state government aims to uplift the socio-economic condition of weavers through the Handloom Development Scheme.

In a major highlight, Majhi revealed that renowned film actress Madhuri Dixit has been roped in as the brand ambassador for Odisha Handloom for one year.

He expressed hope that with her support, Odisha’s handloom garments will gain greater national and international recognition.

Highlighting the scale of the industry, Majhi stated that over 1.3 lakh weavers and support workers are directly engaged in the handloom sector across Odisha’s 30 districts.

He praised their commitment to preserving Odisha’s weaving heritage through Primary Weavers’ Cooperative Societies, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and Producer Groups.

The chief minister informed that 33 MoUs worth Rs.7,808 crore were signed during the Odisha Textile Conclave in Eastern India, expected to create 53,300 employment opportunities in the
textile sector.

Reiterating the government’s commitment, Majhi said infrastructure and institutional support are being provided for the sector’s growth.

Handloom parks with common facilities such as dye houses, warehouses, design studios, and quality control labs are being developed in Bargarh and Cuttack.

He noted that over 40 master weavers from Odisha have received national awards for excellence and innovation.

He urged people to support weavers and wear handloom garments, a practice rooted in the Swadeshi Movement that began over 120 years ago.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister released the Handloom Day mascot “Resha” and a *short film on the state’s handloom industry.

He also felicitated distinguished weavers from across the state.

Speaking as chief guest, Madhuri Dixit said she deeply feels the pulse of the weavers.

“This industry is not just about clothing, it is the identity of every Odia. Handloom is not merely a livelihood; it is deeply woven into our culture and way of life,” she said.

Minister for Handloom, Textiles, Handicrafts, and Cooperation, Pradeep Bala Samanta, said the state has taken several initiatives to preserve the rich textile heritage while modernising it to meet market demands.

He urged the youth to wear Odisha handloom, honour the artisans, and promote indigenous products.
