Odisha Governor calls for greater EV adoption, green initiatives

Bhubaneswar, Sep 15 (UNI) Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati today urged citizens to adopt electric vehicles (EVs) in the state’s rapidly expanding cities, stressing their importance in reducing pollution and dependence on fossil fuels.
Speaking at the 42nd Foundation Day of the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), Dr. Kambhampati emphasised the need for collective action to safeguard the environment and secure a healthier future.
He pointed out that the Raj Bhavan’s official fleet has already been converted to EVs, substantially reducing its carbon footprint and setting an example for others to emulate.

The Governor also encouraged the installation of rooftop solar systems, noting that such initiatives lower electricity costs, promote clean energy, and enable residents to benefit from government subsidies under renewable energy schemes.
Reflecting on OSPCB’s four-decade journey, Dr. Kambhampati praised the Board for serving as a regulator, guide, and partner in balancing industrial growth with ecological responsibility.
“This day is not just a milestone, but a celebration of the Board’s holistic and progressive approach to protecting Odisha’s environment,” he said.
Highlighting the state’s upcoming plantation drive on September 17, under which 75 lakh saplings will be planted across Odisha, the Governor urged citizens and students to participate actively. He said the initiative would expand green cover, improve air quality, and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Dr. Kambhampati also commended OSPCB’s initiatives in air quality improvement, river restoration, and real-time monitoring of industries and water bodies.
He lauded the government’s promotion of e-buses, EV subsidies, interest-free loans, and wider rooftop solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana.
Calling pollution a grave threat to health, livelihoods, and future generations, the Governor urged people to reduce plastic use, manage e-waste, conserve water, plant trees, and embrace renewable energy.
He further encouraged the OSPCB to set bold targets for the next decade, focusing on green technologies, zero-waste industries, youth engagement, and digital tools for environmental monitoring.
