Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), July 5: The Odisha government is set to deploy advanced technologies for traffic management during the upcoming Rath Yatra, as announced by Traffic ADG Dayal Gangwar. Artificial intelligence (AI) will integrate with CCTV systems to enhance traffic control measures. Additionally, a fleet of drones will be employed to monitor crowd movements and relay real-time data to the control room.
Preparations for the Rath Yatra have entered their final phase, with traffic restrictions slated to commence from the night of July 6. State-of-the-art CCTV cameras equipped with AI capabilities have been strategically installed to optimize traffic management. For the first time, vehicle counts will be recorded at entry points, encompassing buses, cars, bikes, and autos. Special traffic arrangements are planned for key routes such as Puri-Brahmgiri, Puri-Bhubaneswar, and Puri-Konark, addressing both inbound and outbound traffic flows.
Identified traffic “black spots” will benefit from drone surveillance, enhancing operational efficiency in critical areas. A dedicated WhatsApp chat group with a QR scanner has been established to provide commuters with real-time traffic updates via scanned codes. Over 50 platoons and 450 officers have been mobilized to oversee traffic management, ensuring smooth operations.
Further infrastructure enhancements include three-lane traffic arrangements at Maltipatpur on the Puri-Bhubaneswar National Highway. During the Rath Yatra, significant numbers of tourist and regular buses, as well as vehicles from various state blocks, are expected. To accommodate these, special parking facilities have been designated along key routes.
Traffic ADG emphasized that these measures will remain in effect from the Rath Yatra through Sunabesha, underscoring the comprehensive approach taken by Odisha Police in leveraging technology to manage traffic effectively during the festival.
