Odisha Forms High-Level Committee to Address Mahanadi Water Dispute

The Odisha Government has constituted a high-level committee to tackle the complexities of the Mahanadi water dispute.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi directed the Water Resources Department to form the panel under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo.

The committee will examine every dimension of the issue, offering policy guidance to technical and administrative efforts.

Its primary objective is to strengthen Odisha’s position before the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal and safeguard the state’s interests while maintaining constructive engagement with national institutions.

Senior leaders and legislators, including Suresh Pujari, Prithviraj Harichandan, Sampad Chandra Swain, Saroj Kumar Pradhan, Niranjan Pujari, Jayanarayan Mishra, and Sofia Firdous, have been inducted as members.

Officials emphasised that coordinated action and expert input will be central to the committee’s work.

The formation of this panel signals Odisha’s proactive approach to the long-standing dispute, aiming to provide clarity on strategies and reinforce the state’s stance in ongoing discussions.

The committee’s recommendations are expected to influence future decisions and strengthen Odisha’s case in the tribunal hearings scheduled later this month.
