Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), Dec 7: Excise revenue in Odisha has surged to ₹7,216.99 crore during the 2023-24 financial year, reflecting a steady increase in liquor sales, the state Assembly was informed on Saturday. Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan provided this information while responding to a question posed by Congress MLA Sofia Firdous.
According to the data presented, the excise revenue for 2023-24 marks a significant rise compared to ₹6,455 crore in the previous fiscal year. Notably, the sale of foreign liquor rose by an impressive 5.41 lakh liters, contributing to the revenue boost.
Bargarh district topped the list for excise revenue collection, generating ₹124.99 crore, while Ganjam followed with ₹96.10 crore. Over the past decade, the state has amassed a total of ₹38,364.24 crore in excise revenue.
In response to a separate query from Khurda MLA Prasanta Kumar Jagadev, Minister Harichandan noted that Odisha currently has 1,073 liquor-off shops and 762 liquor-on shops. Of these, 509 hold licenses for bars, along with 179 country liquor shops and 482 Out Still liquor shops.
