Odisha CM promises student union elections next year

Bhubaneswar, Dec 26: Students’ union elections in colleges and universities across Odisha are set to be held in the upcoming academic year, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Thursday. This announcement is particularly significant, as student body elections have not taken place in the state for the past six years.
During his address at the 49th state conference of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the Chief Minister criticized the previous Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government for its prolonged suspension of these elections. He questioned the reasons behind the BJD regime’s decision to halt union elections in educational institutions, emphasizing that the current state government is committed to facilitating the elections in the next academic year.
It is important to note that the previous government suspended student union elections since 2018, citing various reasons including natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic, and campus unrest. Opposition parties have argued that this suspension hindered students’ opportunities for leadership development, while several student groups organized protests against the former government’s decision.
