Cyclone Montha preparedness in Odisha

Odisha CM Leads Emergency Review as Cyclone Montha Nears Andhra Coast

Bhubaneswar, Oct 28 — As Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi convened a high-level emergency meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan to assess the state’s preparedness. Although the cyclone is expected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha may still face heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several districts.

Joined by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, Development Commissioner Anu Garg, Chief Secretary, and Special Relief Commissioner, the CM reviewed contingency plans and directed officials to ensure zero casualty. District collectors and department heads participated virtually, sharing updates on local readiness.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has classified Montha as a severe cyclonic storm, with wind speeds projected to reach 110 kmph. In response, Odisha has activated emergency protocols in vulnerable zones, deployed disaster response teams, and stocked relief materials. Evacuation plans and shelter arrangements are in place, while communication and medical support systems have been mobilized.

CM Majhi emphasized proactive action and coordination to minimize impact and safeguard lives. The state’s swift response reflects its commitment to disaster resilience and public safety.
