Odisha Charts Ambitious Flight Path with 15 Airports by 2047
In a bold move to transform Odisha into a premier aviation hub in eastern India, the state government has unveiled plans to establish 15 fully operational airports by 2047.
The initiative, discussed at the fourth meeting of the High Power Committee on Aviation, chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, is part of the broader Vision of Vikshit Odisha 2036–47.
The strategy emphasises enhanced connectivity, policy reforms, and investment attraction to fuel economic growth.
Key projects include the proposed Greenfield International Airport at Puri, upgrades to existing airstrips, and improved links to industrial hubs such as Rourkela and Jharsuguda.
To build a skilled workforce, Odisha plans to operationalise the Aviation Centre at Dhenkanal and encourage Flight Training Organisations (FTOs).
The state is also considering recognising manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facilities as a “Thrust Sector” under its Industrial Policy, aiming to attract private investment and generate high-skill jobs.
Additionally, a new Destination Policy will expand general aviation services using small aircraft, targeting remote and tribal areas to improve accessibility and stimulate local economies.
Officials stressed the importance of seamless inter-departmental coordination and swift project execution to meet the ambitious targets.
With proactive planning and a comprehensive State Aviation Policy in the works, Odisha is positioning itself as a gateway for eastern India’s aerial ambitions, unlocking opportunities in tourism, trade, and investment.
