Odisha Cabinet decides on Assembly dissolution before vote counting

Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), June 3: On Monday, the Odisha Cabinet decided to recommend to the Governor the dissolution of the 16th Legislative Assembly, a day before the vote counting for the twin elections held in the state. The decision was reached during a meeting of the state Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneswar, according to official sources.

The final Cabinet session of the fifth term of the BJD government was conducted in virtual mode. The primary agenda of this meeting was to propose the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly following the conclusion of the election process.

It was agreed upon that the Governor would be formally notified regarding the completion of the BJD government’s tenure and the recommendation for the dissolution of the Assembly. This action is a procedural requirement typically fulfilled before the declaration of election results, as the state assembly’s five-year term draws to a close.

Elections for the 147-member Assembly were conducted simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls over four phases between May 13 and June 1 in the state. According to constitutional provisions, the state cabinet will pass a resolution to dissolve the assembly after the declaration of election results. The cabinet and chief minister will then tender their resignations to the Governor to facilitate the formation of the new assembly.

The dissolution of the assembly will only be official after approval and notification by the Governor.
