Nitish Kumar to Resign November 19 as NDA Secures Historic Bihar Victory

Patna, November 17, 2025: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has secured a historic majority in the Bihar Assembly elections, winning 202 out of 243 seats.

Following this decisive victory, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that he will resign on November 19, 2025, after meeting Governor Arif Mohammad Khan.

The state cabinet has already approved the dissolution of the 17th Assembly, which will formally end on November 19. Until then, Nitish Kumar will continue as caretaker Chief Minister.

Preparations are underway for the formation of a new NDA government, with the swearing‑in ceremony scheduled for November 20 at Gandhi Maidan, Patna.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with the BJP‑led state Chief Ministers, is expected to attend the grand event. The NDA’s seat tally includes the BJP with 89 seats, the JDU with 85, LJP (Ram Vilas) with 19, and other allies securing 9 seats.

After Nitish Kumar’s resignation, the JDU legislative party will meet to elect him as leader, followed by the BJP and NDA joint meetings to finalise leadership. The NDA delegation will then stake a claim to form the new government.

This marks a significant political moment in Bihar, cementing the NDA’s dominance and setting the stage for Nitish Kumar’s continued leadership under a fresh mandate.
