Next Vice President Likely to Be BJP Nominee, Says Shashi Tharoor
(OT Webdesk)Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has stated that the next Vice President of India will “almost certainly” be a nominee of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), citing its dominant majority in both Houses of Parliament.
His remarks come in the wake of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on July 21, officially attributed to health concerns, though reports suggest underlying tensions with the Centre.
Tharoor emphasised the importance of bipartisan consultation, expressing hope that the government would engage with the Opposition before finalising its candidate.
The Election Commission has announced the timeline for the Vice Presidential election:
- Notification: August 7
- Nomination Deadline: August 21
- Polling Date: September 9
With the NDA commanding support from 422 MPs—well above the 391 votes required—the outcome appears firmly in the ruling coalition’s favor.
