Mayurbhanj Man Kills Mother Over Sorcery Suspicions

Mayurbhanj, Odisha: A shocking incident unfolded in Kalarafulia village under Betnoti police limits when a man allegedly killed his mother over suspicions of sorcery.

The accused, identified as Tapan Barik (35), believed his mother, Raimani Singh (48), practised witchcraft and blamed her for his wife’s repeated miscarriages.

Villagers reported that Tapan had been behaving abnormally for months, frequently accusing his mother of causing his misfortunes. His wife had left the house two months earlier following domestic disputes.

On Wednesday morning, an argument escalated, and Tapan attacked his mother with a sharp weapon, killing her instantly. Police arrested him soon after, seized the weapon, and sent the body for a post‑mortem.

Authorities are investigating whether superstition or mental health issues triggered the crime.

The incident has reignited concerns about blind belief in sorcery in rural Odisha, with locals demanding strict action and stronger awareness campaigns to prevent similar tragedies.
