Mayurbhanj Elephant Attack: Elderly Man Killed, Highway Blocked in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, March 3: A tragic incident unfolded in Digariastia village under Kuliana police station limits of Mayurbhanj district when a 60‑year‑old man, Bulu Giri, was trampled to death by a wild elephant while attending nature’s call.
The shocking death triggered widespread protests, with villagers blocking National Highway 18 near Jeje Dhaba.
Demonstrators demanded immediate compensation for the victim’s family and relocation of the elephant herd that has been roaming the area for months.
According to reports, a herd of four elephants—including a tusker, two females, and a calf—strayed into the village in search of food.
Forest officials, led by Vijay Kumar Sethi of Deuli Range, have been attempting to drive the herd back to Similipal National Park.
While one tusker has already returned, the rest remain in the vicinity, heightening tensions.
Police are monitoring the situation as locals insist the District Collector intervene to ensure the elephants are shifted back to their natural habitat.
