Maoist-Police Gunfight Erupts in Saranda Forest, One Rebel Feared Dead

Jharkhand Border | Nov 7, 2025 A fierce exchange of gunfire broke out Thursday evening between security forces and Maoist insurgents in the dense Saranda forest, straddling the Odisha-Jharkhand border.

The encounter occurred during an anti-Maoist operation led by Odisha police under the jurisdiction of Jareikela police station.

According to official sources, Maoists opened fire upon spotting the advancing security personnel. In response, the police retaliated, triggering a prolonged gun battle that lasted nearly an hour.

Preliminary reports suggest one Maoist may have been killed, though identity confirmation is pending. Several others are believed to be injured.

Security forces recovered two SLR rifles and one .303 rifle from the site. Following the exchange, Maoist operatives reportedly fled into the surrounding hilly terrain. The area has since been cordoned off, and a search operation is underway.

DIG-level officials confirmed the encounter and stated that combing operations will continue until the zone is fully secured.
