Maoist Cadre With ₹21 Lakh Reward Surrenders in Malkangiri, Odisha Declared Naxal-Free

Malkangiri district in Odisha has officially been declared Naxal-free following the surrender of Sukhram Markam, a senior Maoist cadre carrying a reward of Rs 21 lakh.

Markam, also known by aliases Suresh and Yogesh, laid down arms before the police, marking a significant victory in the state’s fight against left-wing extremism.

During the surrender, Markam handed over an SLR rifle, ammunition, IEDs, codex wire, Maoist uniforms, and other materials. Police officials described the event as the “final blow” to Maoist presence in the region.

Markam, 32, had been active since 2010 and was involved in several violent incidents, including abductions, civilian killings, armed dacoity, IED blasts, and gunfights with security forces in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

He also played a role in indoctrinating villagers and recruiting new cadres.

Authorities said sustained security pressure, disillusionment with Maoist ideology, lack of local support, and Odisha’s new surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy influenced his decision.

The appeal of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi further encouraged the move.

Under the rehabilitation scheme, Markam will receive benefits worth Rs 21 lakh, including interim relief, housing under Antyodaya Gruha Yojana, marriage incentives, skill development training with monthly stipends, health coverage, and subsidised ration.

Odisha DGP urged other Maoist cadres to follow suit, assuring protection, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society with dignity.
