Malkangiri Internet Shutdown Extended Amid Odisha Violence and Relief Efforts
The Odisha government has extended the suspension of internet services in Malkangiri district for the fifth consecutive time, citing security concerns and the need to prevent the spread of misinformation.
The shutdown follows violent clashes between residents of MV‑26 and Rakhelguda villages after the alleged killing of a woman landowner in a sharecropping dispute.
The unrest escalated into retaliatory attacks, arson, and widespread property damage, with preliminary estimates placing losses at Rs 3.4 crore. Several homes were destroyed, prompting immediate relief measures.
The administration has deployed four assessment teams to survey damages, while blankets and essential supplies are being distributed to affected families.
Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo, accompanied by Minister Gokulananda Mallik, visited the violence‑hit areas to hold peace‑building discussions with villagers.
Singh Deo later submitted a detailed report to Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, outlining the sequence of events, relief measures, and long‑term peace initiatives.
Security forces remain stationed in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation. Authorities confirmed that the decision to lift the internet suspension will be reviewed based on ground conditions and security assessments.
