Malkangiri Faces 18-Hour Internet Blackout Amid Tensions

Malkangiri,  – December 9, 2025: The Odisha Government has extended the suspension of internet services in Malkangiri district for another 18 hours, pushing the restriction until 12:00 PM on December 10, 2025.

The decision was announced by Additional Chief Secretary Satyabrata Sahu, IAS, following consultations with the RDC and District Collector.

Authorities stated the extension was necessary to curb the circulation of false, provocative, and inflammatory messages on social media platforms that could disrupt public order.

The suspension covers mobile internet, broadband, and data services across all providers. Popular platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Instagram, and Snapchat remain inaccessible during this period.

However, essential services continue to operate without disruption. Networks such as OSWAN (Odisha State Wide Area Network), NIC Net, NKN (National Knowledge Network), along with banking services, railways, and government offices, remain functional.

Officials have warned that violations of the order will invite strict legal action under relevant provisions of law.

The directive has already been forwarded to all mobile and internet service providers for immediate compliance.

This extension follows a previous 24-hour suspension imposed after clashes in the district, highlighting the government’s cautious approach to maintaining peace and order.
