Kendrapara Horror: Father-in-Law Tries to Burn Woman Alive Over Birth of Girl Child

Kendrapara, Odisha: In a shocking incident from Damarpur village, Kendrapara district, a woman narrowly escaped death after her father-in-law allegedly attempted to set her ablaze for giving birth to a girl child.

The victim, Sasmita Das, was asleep when her father-in-law poured petrol on her bed and ignited it. She managed to flee with her newborn daughter, spending the night outside to protect themselves. Household items were destroyed in the fire.

Sasmita, married to Sushant Ray for eight years, revealed that she had been subjected to continuous harassment by her husband and in-laws for failing to bear a male child.

The abuse, both physical and mental, escalated after the birth of her daughter.

Police have launched an investigation into the matter, promising strict action based on her complaint and the evidence collected.

This case underscores the deep-rooted gender bias and violence against women that persist in parts of Odisha, raising urgent questions about societal attitudes toward girl children.
