Janmashtami 2026: Odisha Celebrates Lord Krishna’s Birth with Devotion

Odisha witnessed vibrant celebrations of Janmashtami 2026, marking the birth of Lord Krishna with devotion and cultural fervour.

Temples across the state, including the iconic Puri Srimandir and Bhubaneswar ISKCON, hosted midnight rituals, prayers, and festive gatherings.

At Puri Srimandir, public darshan was restricted from 7 pm until midnight to allow uninterrupted rituals, including the Shri Krishna Janma ceremony.

Meanwhile, the ISKCON temple in Bhubaneswar drew large crowds with elaborate decorations and devotional programmes.

Janmashtami, observed on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in Bhadraba, commemorates Krishna’s birth in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva.

Devotees fast, chant hymns, and celebrate at midnight, symbolising the divine moment of his arrival.

The following day, Odisha communities also embraced the lively Dahi Handi tradition, where human pyramids attempt to break pots filled with curd and milk products, recalling Krishna’s playful childhood mischief.

Together, these rituals and festivities highlight Odisha’s blend of devotion, tradition, and cultural celebration during Janmashtami 2026.
