IndiGo Flight Disruptions Trigger Tourism Setback in Puri

Puri, Odisha—one of India’s most popular pilgrimage and beach destinations—is reeling from the impact of widespread flight cancellations by IndiGo.

Over the past week, more than 800 flights across India have been cancelled, leaving thousands of travellers stranded and forcing hotels in Puri to report a surge in last-minute booking cancellations.

Industry estimates suggest nearly 10% of reservations in Puri have been cancelled in recent days. Hoteliers, including Hans Coco Palm and Atithi Heritage, have reported immediate losses, with dozens of rooms left vacant during what is usually the busiest tourist season in December.

The disruptions stem from IndiGo’s operational challenges following new duty-time regulations introduced on November 1.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo’s CEO, demanding an explanation for the airline’s failure to prepare adequately.

Local tourism stakeholders warn that prolonged cancellations could severely impact livelihoods across the sector—from small hotels and transport providers to guides and local vendors.

December typically brings steady inflows of pilgrims and leisure travellers, but this year’s slowdown threatens to derail revenue projections for the season.

IndiGo has stated that 95% of its services have now been restored, but uncertainty remains for passengers and businesses dependent on air connectivity.

For Odisha’s tourism economy, the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether recovery is possible or losses deepen further.
