Berhampur, (Orissa Today), May 14: Shibashankar Das, an independent candidate vying for the Berhampur Assembly seat, was apprehended by the police on Tuesday in connection with an altercation with BJP’s Berhampur Lok Sabha candidate, Pradeep Panigrahi.
The confrontation reportedly occurred on Monday at Gosaninuagaon while polling was underway at the Utkalmani UP School during the first phase of elections in the state.
Das faces charges of attempted murder and has been remanded to judicial custody following the dismissal of his bail plea.
Meanwhile, Pradeep Panigrahi, the BJP’s Lok Sabha nominee, was transferred to Bhubaneswar AIIMS today after receiving initial treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Sujata, Panigrahi’s wife, expressed concern, stating, “We came to AIIMS Bhubaneswar as there was a chest fracture, along with a neck injury. This incident is a result of the fear of electoral defeat. Despite claims of non-violence by the CM, violence in Odisha has escalated. The people will respond fittingly.”
