Hirakud Dam Releases 6 Lakh Cusecs: Odisha Activates Flood Management Protocols

In response to intense rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River, authorities have opened 24 gates of the Hirakud Dam, releasing a controlled surge of 6 lakh cusecs of water.

The Water Resources Department has assured that the situation remains under control, with no major flood threat in the basin.

Chief Engineer Chandrashekhar Padhi stated that while tributary rivers may experience elevated water levels, minimal rainfall in lower catchment zones has significantly reduced the risk of flooding.

The surge is expected to reach Munduli by Friday morning, prompting heightened vigilance across 10 districts, including Sambalpur, Bargarh, Subarnapur, Balangir, Boudh, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur.

Local administrations have activated evacuation protocols for low-lying areas and are monitoring discharge rates round-the-clock.

Meanwhile, the Baitarani River’s flood wave is receding, and other rivers remain stable. A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal may impact southern Odisha, where reservoirs are prioritising water conservation.

Padhi urged residents to stay informed through official channels and follow safety guidelines. These proactive measures reflect Odisha’s robust flood management strategy, balancing irrigation needs with public safety.
