Hirakud Dam Closes 3 Gates, Reservoir Level Falls in Odisha
Sambalpur, Odisha (Sept 5, 2026): Authorities at Hirakud Dam closed three sluice gates on Saturday to regulate inflow, leaving four gates open as the reservoir level showed a falling trend.
At 9 am, the water level stood at 627.45 feet, with inflow and outflow balanced at 1,47,524 cusecs.
Currently, three gates on the left and one on the right remain open. The spillway is discharging 1,13,722 cusecs, while the power channel carries 30,461 cusecs.
Industrial use accounts for 229 cusecs, and canal discharge totals 3,112 cusecs.
Downstream discharge trends vary: Belgaon (14,800 cusecs) and Patharla (35,621 cusecs) show falling trends, Khairmal records 2,02,000 cusecs, Barmul rises to 1,77,500 cusecs, and Mundali remains steady at 1,55,182 cusecs.
The dam management continues to balance inflow and outflow while monitoring downstream impacts, ensuring flood control and water distribution across Odisha.
