Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: Four special teams have been formed to trace a woman suspected of stealing a newborn boy from the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla, Odisha’s Sambalpur district. The action follows a complaint filed by a couple from Chhattisgarh, who claimed that their newborn baby was stolen by an unidentified woman from the hospital.
Geeta Das, the wife of Mohan Das from Basan in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district, was admitted to VIMSAR’s Gynecology and Obstetrics Department on November 24 and gave birth to a baby boy on November 25. However, on Tuesday afternoon, the couple discovered their baby was missing. Despite a search of the hospital campus, they could not locate him. The hospital authorities subsequently filed a complaint with the Burla police station.
The couple believes that an unknown woman befriended Geeta’s sister, who was unfamiliar with the hospital’s procedures. While the family was at lunch, the woman was seen playing with the baby and, under the pretense of taking him for a stroll, walked out with him. CCTV footage confirmed the woman leaving with the baby. Police are now analyzing the footage and have launched a search operation.
