Dr. K. Lakshmi Bai Donates ₹3.40 Crore to Boost Women’s Health in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, December 7, 2025 — Celebrating her 100th birthday, renowned gynaecologist and retired professor Dr K. Lakshmi Bai has made an extraordinary philanthropic gesture by donating her personal savings of Rs 3.40 crore to establish a Gynaecological Oncology course at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi lauded her act, describing it as “a beacon of compassion and public service.” He praised Dr Bai as a “torch-bearer of dignity, care, and women’s empowerment,” highlighting her decades of dedicated medical service that continue to inspire generations.

In addition to the major donation, Dr Bai contributed Rs 3 lakh to the Berhampur Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society to support adolescent vaccination drives aimed at preventing cancer among women.

Reflecting on her long career at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Dr Bai noted that many women lost their lives to cancer due to a lack of proper treatment.

She expressed hope that her contribution would benefit poor and helpless women in need of care.

Her gesture is being hailed as a significant step toward strengthening specialised healthcare and medical education in Odisha, particularly in the field of women’s health.
