Deogarh Bandh Turns Violent as Protesters Attack Sub‑Collector’s Vehicle, Demand 24‑Hour Healthcare
Deogarh district in Odisha witnessed tense scenes on Wednesday as a bandh called by the Zilla Mahila Ekata Mancha demanding round‑the‑clock healthcare services at the old district hospital spiralled into violence.
Protesters initially blocked National Highway 49 near Ambedkar Chhak, causing major traffic disruption. Police intervened to clear the road, but agitators returned shortly after to block the highway again.
During the agitation, the vehicle of the sub‑collector was allegedly attacked, escalating tensions further.
Authorities detained several protesters and restored order, ensuring normal traffic movement resumed. However, shops and business establishments across Deogarh town remained closed, affecting daily life.
The protesters have warned of intensifying their agitation if their demand for 24‑hour healthcare services is ignored. In response, police have strengthened their presence in sensitive areas to prevent further unrest.
This incident underscores the growing public dissatisfaction with healthcare infrastructure in the district and highlights the challenges faced by authorities in balancing law and order with civic demands.
