Braj Mohan Ram Clarifies Neutrality After Naveen Patnaik Raises Concerns Over Governor’s Remarks

Bhubaneswar: A political debate has emerged in Odisha following comments attributed to newly appointed Governor Braj Mohan Ram, prompting Leader of Opposition and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik to question whether the constitutional office would remain above partisan politics.

Welcoming the appointment of the state’s new Governor, Naveen Patnaik emphasised that the Governor’s office must uphold constitutional values and remain politically neutral at all times.

His remarks came amid reports suggesting that Braj Mohan Ram had indicated a willingness to continue contributing to party organisational activities.

Responding to the controversy, Braj Mohan Ram firmly denied claims that he intended to work for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after assuming the gubernatorial post.

He clarified that as Governor, he stands above party politics and will discharge his duties impartially in accordance with constitutional principles.

The Governor acknowledged his long political association with the BJP but stressed that his constitutional responsibilities require him to serve all citizens equally, irrespective of political affiliations.

He reiterated his commitment to the welfare and development of Odisha and pledged to maintain the dignity of the Raj Bhavan.

The issue has drawn reactions from various political quarters. Several BJD leaders expressed concern over the reported remarks, arguing that any perception of political bias could undermine public confidence in constitutional institutions.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhakta Charan Das also emphasised that Governors must remain above active political considerations and function strictly within constitutional boundaries.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra criticised the reported comments on social media, adding to the broader debate over the role and neutrality of constitutional authorities.

Braj Mohan Ram, who recently took charge as Odisha’s 44th Governor, succeeds Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati.

As the discussion continues, the Governor’s clarification is expected to play a key role in easing concerns over the impartiality of the state’s highest constitutional office.
