BJD Accuses BJP of Weakening Odisha’s Globally Recognized Disaster Management System

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Odisha government, alleging that the state’s once globally acclaimed disaster management system is being weakened due to administrative failures and inadequate preparedness.

Addressing the media, BJD leaders claimed that despite repeated announcements and assurances, the current government has failed to ensure effective disaster response during recent natural calamities.

The party alleged a growing gap between official claims and the realities faced by people in disaster-affected areas.

BJD Media Coordinator Dr Lenin Mohanty criticised the government’s handling of emergencies, stating that Odisha’s hard-earned reputation in disaster preparedness is at risk.

He argued that relief distribution, field-level coordination, and preventive measures have not matched the standards established during previous administrations.

The opposition party highlighted the disaster management framework developed under former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik following the devastating 1999 Super Cyclone.

According to the BJD, strategic investments in cyclone shelters, early-warning systems, evacuation protocols, and community preparedness transformed Odisha into a national and international model for disaster resilience.

The party noted that Odisha’s disaster management initiatives received recognition from international organisations, including the United Nations, for minimising loss of life during cyclones and floods through a “Zero Casualty” approach.

Expressing concern over recent incidents, the BJD alleged that the state’s disaster management machinery has become increasingly dependent on publicity rather than proactive preparedness.

Party leaders warned that any dilution of Odisha’s disaster response system could endanger vulnerable communities during future natural disasters.

The BJD called upon the state government to strengthen disaster management infrastructure, improve emergency response mechanisms, and uphold the legacy that made Odisha a benchmark for disaster preparedness across the country.

As Odisha continues to face recurring cyclones, floods, and extreme weather events, disaster management remains a critical governance issue with significant implications for public safety and resilience.
