(OT Webdesk)Seventeen tourists trekking through the scenic Gandhamardan Hills near Harishankar in Odisha were stranded on Wednesday evening after losing their way due to sudden heavy rainfall and poor visibility.
The group had embarked on a trek from the Harishankar foothills to the Nrusinghanath Temple but reportedly veered off course near the Kapildhara waterfall, approximately 1.5 km from the main trail.
Local authorities swiftly launched a rescue operation using mobile tracking to locate the group. Personnel from Odisha Police, Fire Services, and temple staff joined the mission, which was hampered by dense forest cover, continuous downpour, and lightning.
Rescue efforts resumed late at night once the rain subsided, though the tourists were still awaiting evacuation at the time of reporting.
Officials have issued advisories urging trekkers to avoid monsoon treks, stick to designated trails, and register their plans with local administration to ensure safety.
