Woman’s Self-Immolation Attempt at Dhenkanal SP Office Sparks Probe into Police Inaction
Dhenkanal, — August 23,(OT Webdesk)
A woman from Ankarantipur village, under the jurisdiction of Dhenkanal’s Sadar police station, attempted self-immolation outside the Superintendent of Police (SP) office on Saturday evening, alleging mental harassment and police apathy.
According to sources, the woman had repeatedly approached both Sadar and Town police stations seeking action against her brother-in-law, whom she accused of mental torture.
However, her complaints were allegedly dismissed, with each station redirecting her to the other.
Frustrated by the lack of response, she arrived at the SP office carrying fuel, intending to set herself ablaze. Alert police personnel intervened swiftly, confiscating the flammable materials and preventing a tragedy.
Though physically unharmed, she was visibly distressed.
Dhenkanal SP Abhinav Sonkar has initiated a probe, summoning officers from both stations for questioning. “We are committed to ensuring justice and will take strict action against any lapses found,” Sonkar stated.
The woman is currently under police supervision and receiving counselling.
The incident has sparked public outrage, with locals demanding accountability and systemic reform in police grievance redressal mechanisms.
