Woman perishes while husband fights flames to save her in Boudh

Bhubaneswar, Jan 3: A tragic incident occurred at Purunakatak Chari Chhak in Odisha’s Boudh district on Friday, where a woman, Bishnupriya Meher, was burnt alive in a fire caused by a gas cylinder explosion while cooking. Bishnupriya, a dedicated schoolteacher, was trapped in the flames, while her husband, Sribant Meher, the sarpanch of Banibhusanpur panchayat, suffered critical injuries while attempting to rescue her.
According to reports, the LPG cylinder ignited unexpectedly in the kitchen, prompting Bishnupriya to scream for help. Sribant, hearing her cries, rushed to her side and bravely attempted to extinguish the fire using water. Unfortunately, despite his heroic efforts, Bishnupriya succumbed to her injuries on the spot.
Following the incident, Sribant was immediately transported to the Purunakatak Community Health Centre and then transferred to the district headquarters hospital for urgent care. Due to the severity of his burns, he was later referred to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for specialized treatment.
Local police have since recovered Bishnupriya’s body for a post-mortem examination and have initiated an investigation into the tragic circumstances surrounding the incident.
