Wild Elephants Enter NIT Rourkela Campus, Trigger Panic Among Students

Rourkela: Panic gripped the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela campus on Tuesday morning after two wild elephants strayed into the premises.

Students and staff were advised to remain indoors as forest officials and police rushed to the spot to manage the situation.

Divisional Forest Officer Jaswant Sethi personally supervised the drive operation, ensuring the elephants were guided safely back toward forested areas.

Authorities emphasised that the situation was under control, with teams actively monitoring the animals’ movements to prevent harm.

Campus authorities assured students that safety measures were in place, and vigilance would continue until the elephants were fully relocated.

The incident highlights the growing challenge of human-elephant conflict in Odisha, where forest encroachment often drives wildlife into urban spaces.
