Dhenkanal, June 21(OT Webdesk): In a significant setback for Odisha’s renewable energy ambitions, Waaree Energies Limited has withdrawn its proposed Rs 25,000-crore solar manufacturing hub from Neulopoi in Dhenkanal.
The decision stems from prolonged execution delays at the approved site, despite earlier state-level clearances and a high-profile groundbreaking ceremony in December 2024.
The project, once heralded as a game-changer for India’s clean energy sector, aimed to establish a 6 GW solar manufacturing facility over 600 acres.
Waaree, India’s leading solar PV module manufacturer, now plans to relocate the investment through a multi-site rollout across Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.
According to an official company statement, the revised strategy will “optimise IPO proceeds” and ensure faster execution. The redistributed project will feature:
- 3 GW module capacity at Samakhiali, Gujarat
- 3 GW capacity in Gujarat/Tamil Nadu/other states
- 6 GW cell manufacturing unit at Unn, Gujarat
- 6 GW ingot and wafer unit in Nagpur, Maharashtra
The pullout raises critical questions about Odisha’s industrial infrastructure and its ability to attract and retain large-scale green investments, especially as the state gears up for “Odisha Vision 2036.
Analysts suggest the incident may impact investor confidence in the region’s renewable sector viability.
