Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), June 18: Balasore Municipality is under indefinite curfew following clashes near Bhujakhia Pir, prompting the district administration to take swift action to maintain peace.
In response to escalating tensions, the administration imposed curfew overnight and suspended internet services in sensitive areas. Shops, schools, and institutions have been instructed to remain closed until further notice, with residents urged to stay indoors and comply with curfew regulations.
Police presence has been reinforced at key points across Balasore to ensure public safety, while intensified patrols are underway amid the curfew.
The unrest began when locals reported discolored drain water near Bhujakhia Pir, sparking a road blockade and disrupting traffic on Chandipur-Balasore Main Road. Clashes erupted between two groups, leading to stone-pelting incidents.
Law enforcement swiftly intervened to control the situation, and an emergency meeting convened at Balasore Town Police headquarters included Superintendent of Police Sagarika Nath, Member of Parliament Pratap Sarangi, Sadar MLA Manas Dutta, and Balasore Collector Asish Thakre.
In response, the district administration implemented Section 144 from Pir Bazar to Patrapada, imposing prohibitory orders to prevent further violence.
