Bhubaneswar (Orissa Today): The Utkal University campus is facing a two-decade-long struggle against unauthorised occupants in its hostels and quarters. Non-students have allegedly taken over spaces meant for students, leaving many without proper accommodation. The situation has been exacerbated by reports of drug-related activities and growing tensions between student organisations.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Utkal University Student Union have come forward demanding immediate action. They have submitted petitions to the Vice Chancellor, highlighting issues such as unauthorised encroachment, illicit activities, and inadequate security measures. Both groups have warned of indefinite hunger strikes if their demands are not addressed promptly.
Key demands include creating a “drug-free campus,” clearing illegal settlements around the university, and restoring campus housing to its rightful occupants. Students have rallied in significant numbers, bringing the administration under mounting pressure.
The Vice Chancellor and police authorities are now faced with urgent calls to bring stability to the troubled campus environment.
