( OT Webdesk)In a move that has sparked global debate, U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed that Canada could receive free access to the United States’ upcoming “Golden Dome” missile defence system, on the condition that Canada agrees to become the 51st state of the U.S.
Trump made the controversial offer via Truth Social, stating that Canada would otherwise need to pay $61 billion to gain access to the defence shield.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney swiftly rejected the proposal, reaffirming Canada’s sovereignty by stating: “Canada is not—and will never be—for sale.”
The “Golden Dome” system, set to be operational by 2029, is a $175 billion project designed to counter threats from ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonic weapons, and space-based attacks.
Trump’s offer has been widely criticised by Canadian lawmakers and analysts, with many calling it “imperialistic” and “absurd.
The deal adds to ongoing tensions between the two countries, including trade disputes and border policy disagreements.
