Tragic Death of Odisha Student Sparks Concerns Over Online Gaming Addiction
Bhubaneswar, May 28, ( OT webdesk)– In a heartbreaking incident, an 18-year-old student from Bangari village, Odisha, has lost his life, allegedly due to financial losses incurred in online gaming.
The victim, identified as Umakanta Jena, was a promising student studying at a private college in Bhubaneswar.
Umakanta, who had returned home for vacation, reportedly transferred money from his father’s bank account without his knowledge and feared the consequences.
As per family sources, distress over the financial loss may have driven him to consume poison.
Upon discovering his condition, relatives rushed him to Pattamundai, and later, he was referred to Cuttack in critical condition. Tragically, he succumbed to the poisoning on the way.
Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The incident has ignited discussions on the adverse psychological effects of online gaming addiction, particularly among students.
Experts and social activists emphasise the importance of parental vigilance and responsible gaming habits to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
