Tragedy in Koraput: Elderly Woman’s Body Found in Kolab Reservoir

Koraput, Odisha – The decomposed body of a 60‑year‑old woman, identified as Saita Khilla of Sunapur village, was recovered from the Kolab reservoir under Koraput Municipality on Tuesday.

According to locals, Khilla had been missing for the past three days.

Her body was spotted floating in the reservoir, prompting villagers to inform local councillor Leha Pradhan, who immediately alerted the police and fire services.

Relatives later confirmed her identity, stating that she had been suffering from mental instability. They suspect she may have accidentally slipped into the reservoir while visiting the site for open defecation.

The Koraput Town Police registered an unnatural death case and sent the body to Koraput Medical College and Hospital for post‑mortem examination before handing it over to the family.

Khilla’s family, described as extremely poor, has appealed to the government for assistance in the wake of the tragedy.

This incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of marginalised communities and the urgent need for improved sanitation facilities in rural areas to prevent such mishaps.
