Tragedy at Gumma Waterfall: Two Students Missing in Malkangiri
Malkangiri, Nov 19: A tragic incident unfolded at Gumma waterfall in Khairput block of Malkangiri district when two college students went missing while bathing in the stream.
According to reports, five students from Jeypore Vikram Dev College visited the waterfall on Wednesday. Four of them entered the water holding hands, but three lost their footing in the strong current.
Local villagers managed to rescue one, while two others were swept away and disappeared beneath the water.
The missing students hail from Narayanpatna and Jeypore Nuasahi. Police and Mathili fire service personnel rushed to the spot and launched search operations.
Darkness hampered efforts on Wednesday evening, but rescue teams resumed operations early Thursday morning.
The incident has shocked the local community. Gumma waterfall, a popular tourist destination, has witnessed similar tragedies in the past. Last year, two brothers from Jayapur drowned at the same site.
Authorities have once again urged visitors to exercise caution and avoid bathing in strong currents.
