Torrential Rains Paralyze Malkangiri as Key Bridges Submerge, NH-326 Blocked
Malkangiri, Odisha – September 2, 2025: Relentless rainfall has brought life to a standstill in Odisha’s Malkangiri district, with two major bridges—Kangurukonda and Kanyashram—submerged under 4–5 feet of water.
The deluge has crippled traffic along National Highway 326, cutting off connectivity between Malkangiri and Kalimela.
Triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, the downpour began Monday evening and has left hundreds of vehicles stranded, including passenger buses returning from Hyderabad.
Emergency sources report an average of 37.77 mm rainfall in the district over the past 24 hours, with Chitrakonda (59 mm) and Kalimela (52 mm) among the worst-hit blocks.
Rising water levels in rivers, canals, and reservoirs have sparked fears of flooding in low-lying areas.
District Collector Somesh Upadhyay has instructed BDOs and Tehsildars to remain on high alert and ensure emergency preparedness.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as stranded commuters await relief and restoration of transport links.
