Toilet Delivery Sparks Outrage Over Hospital Negligence in Odisha
Malkangiri, — September 9 A shocking case of medical negligence has emerged from Kalimela Community Health Center in Malkangiri district, where a pregnant woman was forced to deliver her baby inside a toilet due to lack of medical attention.
The woman, a resident of Nalagunti village, was admitted to the health center on Monday morning with severe labor pains. Despite her condition, hospital staff allegedly ignored her cries for help. With no assistance, she made her way to the toilet alone, where she gave birth to a baby boy without any medical support.
The distressing scene was discovered by another patient’s relative, who helped rescue both mother and child.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among locals, who are demanding accountability from the hospital administration.
Reports reveal that the health center operates with only one gynecologist, who also serves as the in-charge officer and is frequently absent—even during emergencies. Locals claim that staff shortages and negligence are common, leaving patients vulnerable and underserved.
When contacted, Medical Officer Dinabandhu Mahanandia dismissed the incident as “natural,” denying any wrongdoing despite mounting criticism.
This incident has reignited concerns about the state of rural healthcare in Odisha, highlighting the urgent need for systemic reform and improved accountability.
