Three Dead, Two Injured as Old Building Collapses Near Manisahu Chhak in Cuttack

Cuttack, Nov 8: A devastating incident unfolded in Cuttack city this evening when a portion of an old apartment near Manisahu Chhak, close to Hadibandhu School, collapsed onto a nearby slum dwelling.

The tragedy claimed the lives of three individuals—a husband, wife, and their 5-year-old child—while a woman and another child sustained injuries and were rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital.

According to the Commissionerate Police, the collapse occurred around 4:45 PM when a section of the apartment’s roof gave way, crashing onto the adjacent slum structure.

Rescue teams from the fire department and local police responded swiftly, pulling out five victims from the debris. Doctors later confirmed the deaths of the three family members.

The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed. Rescue operations continued late into the evening as officials combed through the rubble for any additional victims.

The incident cast a shadow over the city’s festive mood, as the historic Bali Yatra—currently underway along the banks of the Mahanadi—was jolted by the news.

This marks the second fatal accident in the district this week, following the death of three children who fell into a septic tank in the Badamba block.

Authorities have urged residents in ageing structures to remain vigilant and report structural vulnerabilities to avoid further tragedies.
