Suspected Bangladeshi infiltrator with firearm detained in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Aug 30 (UNI) Police in Odisha’s Kendrapara district today detained a suspected Bangladeshi infiltrator carrying an unlicensed firearm from a coastal village in Rajnagar police station limits, police said.

The accused Mrutunjaya Mandal, who claimed to be a native of Sandeshkhali Subdivision of North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, had migrated to Gupti village in Rajnagar police station jurisdiction to work as an agricultural worker.
He was nabbed with the firearm. Further investigation is underway as he has failed to furnish documentary proof of Indian citizenship, said Naresh Sahu, the Inspector-In-Charge, Rajnagar police station.

“The possibility of the migrant worker being a Bangla infiltrator may not be ruled out. We are cross-checking his bona fide nativity root with counterparts of the West Bengal police. A case under the Arms act has been registered against him. If his Bangla nativity root is established, he will also be booked under the provisions of the Foreigners Act,” IIC Sahu added.

Kendrapara with 1,649 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, has the highest number of infiltrators living in the coastal district.

It may be noted here that 1,551 Bangladeshis from coastal Odisha were served ‘quit India’ notice in 2005 in accordance with Foreigners Act provision. However, the exercise to deport them was put on hold by the Centre amid allegations of wrongful identification of the suspected foreign nationals.
