Sundargarh’s Tourism Revival: 33 Sites Slated for Development

In a major push to boost tourism in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, the state government has prioritised the development of 33 tourist destinations following proposals by Deputy Speaker Bhawani Shankar Bhoi and Rourkela MLA Sarada Prasad Nayak.

Despite Sundargarh’s presence on the state tourism map with 13 recognised sites, only three—Vedvyas, Khandadhar, and Pitamahal Dam—have seen partial development, leading to dwindling tourist footfall and negligible foreign visits.

Responding to the legislators’ proposals, the Tourism Department has initiated steps to assess land records, ownership details, and prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for each site. Additional Secretary Saroj Kumar Swain has formally requested the Sundargarh Collector to expedite the process and submit the financial requirements.

The proposed sites span religious, natural, and cultural attractions, including Usha Kothi Shiva Temple, Sukha Mahadev Temple, Ib River beautification, and waterfalls like Badalgiri and Akshayashila. The move is expected to revitalise local tourism, generate employment, and preserve regional heritage.

Locals are hopeful that this long-overdue initiative will finally unlock Sundargarh’s tourism potential and place it firmly on Odisha’s travel circuit.
